The Necessity of Livestreaming
For many churches, livestreaming is a weekly necessity — but that doesn’t mean it has to be complicated. If you use a Blackmagic Design ATEM Mini Pro, Mini Extreme, or ATEM SDI Pro ISO/SDI Extreme ISO, you can stream directly from the switcher itself. No external encoder or complicated software — just plug in, configure once, and you’re ready to go live each Sunday.
This guide will walk you through how to stream from BMD ATEM, plus show you how to use it as a webcam if you prefer streaming through a computer.

Before You Start
To stream directly from your ATEM, make sure you have the following:
- A compatible ATEM model: ATEM Mini Pro/Pro ISO, Mini Extreme/Extreme ISO, or ATEM SDI Pro ISO/SDI Extreme ISO. (The base ATEM Mini and base ATEM SDI do not include direct-streaming capability.)
- An Internet connection: a wired Ethernet connection to your router or network switch is best.
- Streaming credentials: You’ll need a Stream Key and Server URL from your platform (YouTube Live, Facebook Live, or custom RTMP).
- ATEM Software Control: this free program lets you configure streaming settings and control your switcher from a computer.
- Resolution note: ATEM Mini and SDI models stream and record in 1080p HD (no 4K or 1080i for streaming).
Once these are ready, you can configure your switcher for direct streaming.
Step 1: Connect to Your Network
Use an Ethernet cable to connect your ATEM’s network port directly to your router. If your model supports it, you can also connect via a smartphone tether (USB-C) for mobile streaming, though Ethernet is more reliable for church setups.
Step 2: Launch ATEM Software Control
Open the ATEM Software Control app on a computer that’s connected to the same network. The software will automatically detect your ATEM switcher.
If this is your first time using it, the program may prompt you to enter your switcher’s IP address — it’s printed on a label underneath the unit.
Step 3: Enter Streaming Settings
In the Output or Streaming tab, you’ll find all the options for livestreaming.
- Choose your platform — YouTube, Facebook, Twitch, or Custom RTMP.
- Enter your Server URL and Stream Key.
- You’ll find these in your streaming platform’s “Go Live” or “Stream Setup” page.
- Select your streaming quality.
- The ATEM encodes in H.264 and supports up to 1080p 60 fps (model-dependent).
- Save your settings and click the ON AIR button in the software — or press the physical ON AIR button on the switcher itself.
Step 4: Monitor Your Stream
When you’re live, the Multiview output shows vital information like connection status, bitrate, and dropped frames — available on Pro and Extreme models.
If you notice buffering or “Stream Failed” messages, check:
- Your Internet upload speed (should be at least double your chosen bitrate).
- That your Stream Key hasn’t expired (some platforms rotate keys).
- That your network cable is securely connected.
You can also record your program feed to a USB drive while streaming, giving you a backup copy of every service for your archives.
Step 5: Adjust Quality and Bitrate
Under Streaming Quality, pick Low, Medium, or High based on your upload speed; use HyperDeck High Quality for the highest-quality recordings to USB. If you experience buffering or instability, step down one level.
Exact data rates vary slightly by firmware version and destination platform.
Step 6: End the Stream
When your service ends, simply click “Off Air” in ATEM Software Control or press the physical ON AIR button again.
Your stream will stop instantly, and your audience will see the feed end on their platform.
Optional: Using the ATEM as a Webcam
If your ATEM model doesn’t have built-in streaming — or you’d rather stream through software like OBS, Ecamm Live, or vMix — you can connect it to your computer as a USB webcam.
Just plug a USB-C cable from the ATEM to your computer, open your streaming software, and select “Blackmagic Design” as the camera source.
This method still gives you professional multi-camera switching while using your existing computer workflow.
Final Thoughts
Streaming directly from your BMD ATEM simplifies livestreaming for church teams of any size. Once it’s configured, you can go live with just one button and monitor everything right from the ATEM Multiview.
Whether you stream directly to YouTube Live or use it as a webcam through OBS, the ATEM Mini Pro and Extreme models offer powerful, reliable tools that make your church’s livestreaming workflow smoother than ever.
