How to Troubleshoot a Blank Screen
Few things are more stressful for a church tech volunteer than seeing “No Signal” on a projector or TV right before a service starts. Thankfully, this is one of the easiest problems to solve once you know where to look. Whether you’re running lyrics, sermon slides, or video from a computer or switcher, this short guide will help you quickly troubleshoot a blank screen and get your display back up and running—without needing to call in extra help.
1. Check the Power
It might sound obvious, but make sure both your display (TV or projector) and your source device (computer, camera, or switcher) are turned on and plugged in. Many HDMI issues simply come from one device being powered off or in sleep mode.
💡 Tip: Projectors often take 30–60 seconds to warm up, so give them a moment before troubleshooting further.
2. Confirm the Correct Input
Modern TVs and projectors usually have multiple HDMI inputs, and it’s easy to be on the wrong one. Using your remote control or menu button, check which HDMI port is active and make sure it matches where your cable is plugged in (for example, HDMI 1 or HDMI 2).
💡 Tip: Labeling cables and inputs with a labelmaker can save time for future volunteers.
3. Inspect HDMI Connections
Loose or damaged HDMI cables are one of the most common causes of a “No Signal” message. Gently unplug and reinsert both ends of the cable to ensure a snug connection. If you have a spare HDMI cable, try swapping it to rule out a bad cable.
💡 Tip: If your HDMI cable is running longer than 50 feet, you may need an HDMI extender to maintain a reliable signal.
4. Test the Video Source
Try connecting your source device (such as your computer or ATEM switcher) to a different TV or monitor. If it works on another screen, the problem is likely with your original display or its HDMI port. If it still doesn’t work, the issue is probably with your source device or its HDMI output.
💡 Tip: Restart your computer or switcher after reconnecting cables—it often refreshes the HDMI handshake.
5. Reset and Reboot
If none of the above steps work, power-cycle everything. Turn off your display and video source, unplug them for about 30 seconds, then turn them back on. This resets the HDMI handshake that allows devices to communicate properly.
💡 Tip: Avoid turning equipment on and off rapidly—wait a few seconds between each power-up.
Final Thoughts
Most “No Signal” issues come down to one of three things: a disconnected cable, a wrong input, or a powered-off device. Once you’ve checked those, you can typically get your system working again in minutes.
For larger setups that use long cable runs or multiple displays, consider using an HDMI extender system to prevent signal loss over distance.
